Apparently, Thomas Sowell wants us all to say hello to his new friend.

(For further explanation, check out some of Orac's old posts on the subject or just look at certain relevant pages on Wikipedia like this or this. Feel free to bring a lot of disinfectant along for the ride if completely over-the-top analogies make you feel icky.)

I'll be fair for once and completely ignore the handgun ruling in favor of bringing up a blunder that didn't get nearly enough attention from the media: the Supreme Court weakening a law that might have a lot of relevance concerning a couple of twerps who got busted in Illinois: Scummy and a newspaper magnate and all-around asshat who will definitely be played by Powers Boothe when a film is made about him.

No, this has nothing to do with the actual torture, for once. What disturbs me nearly as much is the idea that Jon Burge didn't just torture suspects to elicit forced confessions; by doing so, he also let the actual perpetrators of such crimes safely fade into the background while innocent men took their place in prison.

Even if Burge actually had the perpetrators dead to rights, he also handed them a Get of out Jail Free card that they could use years later.

Unsurprisingly, a grand jury might be taking a second look at some of Burge's subordinates.
