As I stated on my dread (???) mailing list, it's not nearly as psychologically uncomfortable as, say, The Second Trip or Born with the Dead (both of which I've read), but it's easy to see why Silverbob gave up writing SF for several years and returned in a lighter vein with Lord Valentine's Castle.
