My guess is he kept it under wraps until his very public attempt to appear More Catholic Than Thou (read: _Passion of the Caveziel_, since Jim appears to be nearly as tightly wound on the subject of religion as Mel) caused all sorts of bad behavior such as making threatening noises in the direction of _New York Times_ film critic Frank Rich when Frank questioned his sources.
Unfortunately, his dad Hutton Gibson is one of the primary reasons Mel is the way he is. Check out the following link:
