According to Wikipedia's page on MacLeod, I probably screwed the pooch (lovely image, that) when I picked this up at a SF convention instead of trying to get my hands on The Star Fraction and The Stone Canal first, but the story (I'm up to about a fourth of the way through) seems to be stand-alone enough in nature that I really don't mind.
