The Wikipedia article details his career better than I can, but his roles amounted to a lot more than just playing Alfred in the original slew of Burton/Schumacher Batman films; for one prominent example of him in a SF TV role with a lot more meat to it, there's a certain classic Dr. Who episode from the black and white era - as well as another appearance from the the early 80's.
(Other weird Gough/Who tie-ins include his marriage to former Who regular Anneke Wills and an appearance in Hammer Films' 1962 re-do of Phantom of the Opera with second Doctor Patrick Troughton. Six degrees of non-separation at work, I suppose.)
