It seems that many, many people have taken leave of their senses over the Roman Polanski situation, and those people - ranging from the likes of Whoopi Goldberg to Martin Scorsese, Polanski's sister-in-law Debra Tate and beyond - might want to keep in mind the central facts of the case (a short Wikipedia summary is here), such as the fact that consensual sex is only consensual when it occurs between adults - and Samantha Gailey wasn't one. Furthermore, sex can't really be called "consensual" when one of the parties was flying high on a combination of champagne and 'ludes at the time.
Roman Polanski is an old man. Obviously, that needs to be kept in mind if he's extradited and sentenced. But his advanced age doesn't absolve his guilt, and the fact that he took off and ran after his conviction doesn't exactly help his case, either. And neither will a gaggle of Hollywood celebs lining up to defend him when he doesn't deserve it.

Date: 2009-10-06 11:22 pm (UTC)Look, Polanski did *exactly* what you guys said he did and raped a thirteen-year-old girl. IIRC, he also carried out an "affair" (if you can call it that) with Nastassja Kinski when she was *fifteen* which points to him being a serial pedophile. The only - and I repeat, *only* - thing that could possibly explain his behavior is that he was driven loopy after his wife was stabbed to death by a cult led by a semiliterate, psychotic hick. What happened to Sharon Tate is still no excuse for his turning into a chicken hawk later in life, though, and his running from justice only serves to underline the fact that even *he* knew that he was as guilty as sin.
OTOH, not even fandom is entire immune from this crap. If you google "Walter Breen" (or look him up on Wikipedia, for that matter) you'll see what I mean if you haven't heard or read about him already. Luckily, unlike Polanski, he's quite dead.
