Judging by actions taken by the Vatican over the last few weeks, they've learned absolutely nothing new about dealing with the growing sex abuse scandal. First, there was their typical knee-jerk reaction concerning police raids in Belgium on the palaces of the Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels and the home of a retired previous Archbishop; and now, a Cardinal who was a public critic of the cover-up just got thrown under the bus by Pope Benedict when his criticism of a former Vatican secretary of state hit too close to home.
Again, my question is this: when does the Vatican finally come around to the stunningly modern idea that priests who engage in sexual abuse are just as eligible for prosecution as anyone else who gets caught engaging in such a heinous crime?
